Building Transition to Employment Confidence with Career Center staff

The Career Center is excited to help you get ready for WRP! Please be sure to utilize their online resources prior to scheduling an appointment or coming in during Drop-In Hours.

RESUME

  • Step 1: Please review the Resume Guides and sample resumes. There are several formats to choose from, but you may want to refer to the Resume Worksheet to ensure you have the basic components of a strong resume. After completing the worksheet, you can then create a resume format similar to those found here.
  • Step 2: Once you have a draft of your resume completed, bring a printed copy with you to the Career Center during Drop-In Hours for an initial critique.  Drop-In Hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1:00-3:30pm during the academic year. Please note that you may need to come back a second time depending on the feedback you receive. If the Career Center’s Drop-In Hours do not work for your schedule, you will want to call to schedule one appointment to go overboth your resume and cover letter drafts at the same time (be sure to bring printed copies of everything with you).

COVER LETTER

  • Step 1: Please review the Cover Letter Guide to help you understand how a proper cover letter is constructed. There, you will also find cover letter samples for inspiration!
  • Step 2: In order to write a cover letter, for the purposes of WRP you will need to have an idea of what kind of field you’re interested in pursuing upon graduation (e.g. healthcare, education) and should be based on what your major is/was (recent alumni) or what you might be interested in studying. Think about your strengths - do you enjoy history, research, technology? Why are you interested in obtaining an internship or a job through WRP? You should consider all of this information when creating your cover letter.
  • Step 3:  Once you have a draft of your cover letter completed, bring a printed copy of the letter with you to the Career Center during Drop-In Hours for an initial critique.  Drop-In Hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1:00-3:30pm during the academic year. Please note that you may need to come back a second time depending on the feedback you receive. If the Career Center’s Drop-In Hours do not work for your schedule, you will want to call to schedule one appointment to go over both your resume and cover letter drafts at the same time.

PRACTICE INTERVIEW

  • Step 1: Interviewing can be stressful, but if you properly prepare, there is nothing to worry about!  Be sure to review our resources on interviewing, including the Interview Skills Packet.
  • Step 2: Next, consider practicing your interviewing skills using InterviewStream, an online practice interview software (be sure to watch the introductory video and then click “register” under the login fields to create a free account). This tool allows you to record a practice interview and evaluate yourself based on the recording!
  • Step 3: Call the Career Center to schedule a mock interview with a member of the Career Center staff. Prior to coming in for your mock interview, you will need to email the Career Center a copy of your final draft resume, cover letter, and the job or internship you would ideally like to have through WRP. You’ll want to call two weeks in advance to schedule your mock interview, 843-953-5692.

For alumni who are not located in the Charleston area: The Career Center is happy to help you virtually!  Please follow the same steps as above, but instead of coming in during Drop-In Hours, please email your resume, cover letter, and the type of internship or job you would like to be considered for based on your major/career interests to: CareerCenter@cofc.edu. In the subject line include “WRP Interview Preparation Request” and the following text:

“As part of the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) preparation, I am reaching out to request virtual assistance with my resume and cover letter, and to schedule a mock interview by phone. Thank you for your assistance.”

Be sure to attach your documents (resume, cover letter).
